Meltham All Blacks: 22 Drighlington: 22
Meltham’s first home game of the season saw fine weather and good support on the side line.
The first half of the match saw Meltham quickly get into their stride and perform far better than in their previous matches. The first try of the match came from a break down the left wing by Matthew Hird, who off loaded under pressure to a waiting Simon Gardener who crossed the line.
Rob Lewis scored a brace of tries in the remaining part of the first half from the right. Both in defence and in attack Meltham stuck to their game plan, and with people in their more natural positions, were playing well and maintaining discipline. Drighlington came back and scored making the first half score 16-10 to Meltham.
Drighlington tightened up their defence in the second half, which saw the game go from end to end with repeated attacks from both teams. Alan Williams came close to scoring for Meltham but not quite managing to get over the line. Matthew Carter added to his season’s tally crossing the line close to the flag. Drighlington didn’t allow this to deter them as they scored two tries in quick succession (one of which was not converted) to level the score in the dying seconds of the game.
Drighlington voted Alan Williams Meltham’s best forward and Matthew Hird best back, Meltham’s player was very close, with only one vote in it, going to Sean Robinson
